About Me

I am a gluten-free Mom of 2 wonderful kids.  Jon, 12 and also gluten-free, and Hannah, 6.  I have been gluten-free since January 12, 2006.  I was not diagnosed with Celiac via endoscopy/biopsy, but did have positive bloodwork and an extremely positive dietery response.  Jon was diagnose with Celiac disease in July of 2006 via Endoscopy/biopsy and has been gluten-free since July 12, 2006.  He has done well on the diet, but obviously misses his favorite treats, though they weren’t the healthiest.  Hannah has tested negative for Celiac thus far, but does carry one of the genes associated with Celiac. 

This blog is where I plan on sharing some of our gluten-free cooking and baking sucesses and some replacements we have found for favorite foods that we can no longer have.  I also strive to eat a healthy, well balanced gluten-free diet.  It is sometimes hard when you try to replace the goodies you once had.  Lots of the gluten-free foods are higher in calories & fat than their gluten filled counterparts. My goal is to educate my children on how to eat healthy so they can make make smart food choices as they grow up and head out on their own.   That was one thing I struggled with as I became an adult and ended up suffering from an eating disorder in the process.  I now maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.

I am now writing as the Columbus Gluten-Free Food Examiner for The Examiner. I will be writing articles on all things gluten-free in the Columbus area. Please pop over & take a peek if you have a chance.

  7. Fellow gluten free blogger,

    I’m staring a carnival blog as a one-stop shopping place for gluten free information. A blog carnival is like a magazine of articles that gets published on a schedule. Every 3 months (I hope it catches on so that we can do this more often – at least monthly), bloggers submit an article related to the GF lifestyle from their blog.     I am writing to inform you of our new Gluten free menu. About 4 yrs ago my sister Christine and I opened nebo restaurant at 90 N. Washington St. in Boston’s North End. Nebo is a traditional Italian restaurant offering dishes based on recipes that were passed down from our mother and grandmother. After being open for about a year, two of our closest friends were told they had Celiac disease. We then realized just how many people this disease has affected and the need for an alternative for their dining restrictions. Determined to serve our friends their favorites, we set upon making our menu available in a gluten free form. We are thrilled to say that we have now produced 90% of our menu with the same great taste as our regular menu. We don’t think there has been an accomplishment that has brought us more pleasure.   11. Hi Kimberly – I thought I recognized your picture from somewhere…I was doing some research and happened across an article you wrote. I’ve been to your blog many times before but just made the connection. Anyway, I am origionally from Columbus – my entire family lives there. I moved to Dallas almost 7 years ago. I love it here but often miss the feel of Columbus, the energy on game days, the North Market, the Gallery Hop. My little sister lives in by Goodale Park so I live vicariously through her. :)

      Ah…..another Buckeye, huh? ;) We love it here, too! Funny, I lived in Arlington, TX as a child, between the ages of 4-8. I don’t remember much about it other than it was hot! LOL!

      I love Gallery Hop & the North Market! I haven’t been to the Gallery Hop in years, but am trying to get there this summer. :)

      Love your blog! :) I give you a lot of credit for going both gluten & sugar free. Gluten is hard, but both would be really hard.

  13. Hi! I have been gluten- free since April and I feel amazing! My bloodwork didn’t come back positive for celiac, but oh boy does my body revolt when I have any gluten. Still getting used to what I can and cannot have. It helps to know there are other successful gluten- avoiders out there. I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts!

  14. What a wonderful service you are providing Kim. I was diagnosed 7 years ago with Celiac after 11 long years of misdiagnosis, unnecessary surgeries, etc. I’m sure you’ve heard it all before. My reason for writing is because I work at a retail running shoe store in San Diego called the San Diego Running Institute. Due to my disease the owner has become much more proactive in searching for, and carrying various products that are safe for runners, triathletes, and any type of person with Gluten/Dairy sensitivites (Celiacs) … who like to exercise as well.   15. I’m making a cake and two 8 year old twins will be attending the dinner and birthday celebration of 3 people in my family in a week. I was wondering if you could help me adapt this recipe to be gluten & dairy free.

    Snickerdoodle Cake

    Ingredients
    2 cups sugar
    1/2 cup shortening
    2 eggs
    2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup milk

    3 tablespoons sugar
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    DIRECTIONS
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan.

    In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

    In a large bowl, cream shortening and 2 cups sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well with each addition.

    Alternately add milk and flour mixture in three stages, mixing well with each addition.

    In a small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over cake.

    Pour into prepared 9×13 inch pan and bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until done.

  16. Hi! I’m Stephanie and I am 14 years old. I was told I was allergic to gluten, wheat and dairy about a year ago. It has been hard trying to find things that I can eat, but I found your site and have been trying different recipes that you make and have found that I love to cook! I also found out there is a Boston’s Pizza place close to my house and I love their pizza, so thanks for the recommendation! So I just thought I would thank you for posting all these great ideas! I really appreciate it :)

    I just commented on the discussion about Breads from Anna and thought I’d just add a little something here.
    I have been diagnosed with Crohn’s and have had major surgery. I am now going GF, even after the Drs told me I wasn’t gluten sensitive. My current Gastro MD said I should go GF since I have lost part of my small intestine to surgery. I have a feeling that many years of illness and the surgery were unnecessary. I’ll know fairly soon. I just went back to GF. I had tried before but didn’t follow through because of the lack of availability of GF food in my area (rural). But now, I have access to much more. By the way, I started getting ill in high school – I didn’t get diagnosed with Crohns till 40+ years later (and I still don’t know if it is indeed Crohns or Celiac!). And I also have Lupus.
    Also, you may already know this, but Dr. Christiane Northrup (GYN MD/writer) suggests that 3 out of 5 women who are post menopausal are probably gluten sensitive. That’s a lot of people!
    Anyway, you have a good site. I will come back & visit from time to time.

    Many people refer to our Granola (available in 5 delicious flavors) as the best they’ve ever tasted (whether g-f or not). It’s that good!

  22. FYI — I see on your list that Trix is gf. I called General Mills; it is not certified GF because while the products do not contain gluten there is no guarantee that the product doesn’t have cross contamination with other gluten products or ingredients.

  24. Hi! I was just diagnosed with a barley allergy two days ago, so I’m at the beginning of my gf experience. I thought it was going to be the most difficult thing I’ve done, because I love my bread. But after finding sites and blogs like yours, I’m realizing that this is something that is going to be easier than I thought. Thank you so much for putting this blog together and maintaining it. This may be my first visit today, but I will definitely be back!
